Julian Starr is a London-based sound designer and composer working across theatre, television, screen and immersive performance.

Originally from Australia, Julian trained at the prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) and has since developed an international career creating original music, sound worlds and sonic identities for acclaimed theatrical and screen productions.

​

His West End credits include Rose, starring Dame Maureen Lipman at the Ambassadors Theatre, for which Julian was Sound Designer and Composer; Sharon Osbourne – Cut the Crap! at the Fortune Theatre; and Bombay Superstar, the Bollywood-inspired musical concert presented at His Majesty’s Theatre.

Beyond the West End, Julian’s work has been presented at leading venues including: Hampstead Theatre, Marylebone Theatre, Bush Theatre, Southwark Playhouse, Soho Theatre, Arcola Theatre, Park Theatre, Riverside Studios, Theatre Royal of Windsor, HOME Manchester and the V&A Museum. His work has also been presented internationally, with credits across Australia and Europe, including Queensland Theatre, Belvoir St Theatre, NORPA and productions at the historic Valtice Castle in the Czech Republic.

Julian has collaborated with leading directors and creative teams including Kip Williams, Suzie Miller, Maxim Didenko, Melly Still, Sarah Goodes, Heather Fairbairn and Mike Shepherd, as well as working with Grammy and Tony Award-winning performer Billy Porter.

​Alongside his theatre career, Julian has worked in television as Music Editor to composer Joff Bush on the internationally acclaimed animated series Bluey, a production recognised with both BAFTA and Emmy Awards. His screen work reflects the same approach that defines his theatre practice: using music and sound to establish character, atmosphere, rhythm and narrative.

His practice combines sound design and composition to create precise, atmospheric and emotionally driven sonic environments that become an integral part of the storytelling.

Julian is the inaugural Associate Sound Designer at London's multi-award-winning Finborough Theatre and continues to work across major theatrical, screen and international projects.

​

International theatre work includes The Comedy of Errors, presented at the World Heritage-listed Valtice Castle in the Czech Republic, marking the first British theatre company to perform on the castle's historic stage. He returned to the venue to design Pericles.

​

For Julian, sound is not simply an accompaniment to a production. It is part of its dramatic language.

He describes his practice as a process of “sonic discovery” — finding the tone, musical identity and sound world of each project and working closely with directors, producers, performers and creative and technical teams to ensure that sound and music serve the story as a whole.
