About

Julian Starr is an East London based sound designer and composer specialising in creative sound design and composition for theatre, musicals, events, installations and media. 

 

Born and raised in Australia, Julian trained at the prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA). 

Julian works in theatres extensively throughout the UK and Internationally. He has designed shows from West End to Off West End: Hampstead Theatre, Soho Theatre, The V&A Museum, Cadogan Hall, Queensland Theatre Company, Belvoir St Theatre, Finborough Theatre, Theatre503, Kings Head Theatre, HOME Manchester, Park Theatre, Union Theatre, The Rose Kingston Theatre as well as the Edinburgh Festival: Underbelly Venue, Assembly Venue and Pleasance Venue.

In 2018, Julian designed the production of The Comedy of Errors which was staged in the world heritage site of the Valtice Castle in the Czech Republic. The play was spoken in English and was the first-ever British Theatre Company to perform on this stage in its history. In 2019, Julian returned back to the Czech Republic to design Pericles in the Castle's theatre.

During the Covid pandemic, Julian was Joff Bush's music editor for the EMMY and BAFTA Award Winning TV Series Bluey. 

Julian's work has also been seen throughout Brisbane, Sydney and on the famous Bondi Beach.

In 2023, his work will be heard on the production of Miss Peony that will be touring throughout Australia.

Julian is the inaugural Associate Sound Designer to the Multi-Award-Winning Finborough Theatre, London.

My role is to work professionally in collaboration with the director, producers, creative and technical team to deliver the best utilisation of sound and music to support the shows narrative, character development and other design elements as a whole."
